I have a bosch orbital sander, but have always wondered whether I would be better off with one of the dual action sanders. The dual action sanders can also be used for polishing, which is something that I would like to learn how to do.

Can the dual action sanders be used for coarse sanding as well as fine finishing or are you still better off using an orbital sander for that?

Which sander do you currently have? You may find that (random) orbital and dual action (DA) are one and the same.

The Metabo ROS - for instance can do down to a ridiculously low speed on either setting (has 2 "orbits, large and small - if that makes sense) and takes industry standard 6" pads, etc.

I'd entertain using it initially - but would rather get something dedicated like the Portable Cable 7224's or an equivalent like,

(I have no connection with these people.)

As Dibbs states, you would be better off with a dedicated polisher and a DA sander for your sanding work. I use my DA from 80grit right up to 1200 grit, and if my joints are really bad I have a belt sander.
