I needed some pink gloss (don't ask) and some white spirits today, I also wanted a sample of wallpaper that the orange shed sell, (I only use them in an emergency) anyway I couldn't believe my ears when the very nice young lady on the checkout desk said in an embarrassed voice, when I asked for a carry bag, "I'm sorry but I will have to charge you 5p for one", I walk with a stick because of back problems so carrying a tin of gloss, a litre white spirits and 2 wallpaper samples was difficult so I had to pay for the carry bag.

I have just checked my receipt and discovered the nice young lady didn't charge me for the white spirits, I wonder if she did it on purpose?

The nice young lady put both items in the carry bag for me, so she was aware I was also buying the white spirits, now if I did not check my change after leaving the store and I discovered it was short I could not expect them to give me the shortfall, so as I have left the store am I legally obliged to return the white spirits, or should I consider it a gift..............I know what I'm going to do, see if you can guess.

By the way, if there are any police officers reading this my real name is Jonathan Doe and I live in the Outer Hebrides

Didn't you see the sign as you walked in "Free 1 litre white spirits with every carrier bag purchased"?

In Wales everywhere charges you 5p for carrier bags which they are legally bound to do. I guess a lot of stock goes out the door unpaid for because lots of people won't pay the 5p.

Regards Keith

If you hadn't checked the receipt you wouldn't have known.

and as for paying for carrier bags.... don't you think you were anyway ? now you are paying twice.

Why shouldn't they charge for a plastic carrier bag?
They waste resources and are bad for the environment.

Much better to go into a shop with your own, preferably reusable, bag.
Pete the bag is s@!*€, the two handles have stretched with the weight of 1 tin of paint (0.75l) and 2l of white spirit, I couldn't reuse it.

It's got me thinking now, would I have been able to claim if the bag failed completely? after all I had to buy it.

After a while of being charged for carrier bags (Wales) I am now in the habit of taking a decent bag with me when I shop, so I don't buy cheap carriers - which of course is the whole point of charging for them. If I do forget to take a bag with me then I buy (yet another) heavy duty re-usable plastic one or a hessian bag - anything but a disposable carrier. They are just a waste of time, materials, resources etc.

I'm glad they started charging for them in Wales. I think they should charge more than 5p. It may be inconvenient at first but as I said, you get into the habit. Taking a shopping bag is what people always used to do.

I wouldn`t mind paying for a carrier bag if most of the items weren`t unnecesessarily pre-packaged in the first place. It`s becoming increasingly difficult to buy loose apples, carrots, potatoes etc. in the supermarket. Likewise much of the stuff in B&Q etc. It seems like it`s ok for the retailer to put it in bags etc for ease of handling, but the customer isn`t accorded the same privelege.

OK, just what are you going to buy with 5p? Is it going to save your life with a phone call?

+ you can always chuck it in here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Paci ... bage_patch

The one thing that surprises me is that why does nobody get a vac ship and make a fortune hoovering this lot up and putting it back into the system so that the DIY/Supermarkets can make a fortune at 5p a bag out of you lot?

Quite a few shops do and I think it's soon to become law - not difficult to take in bags and the 10p Bags for Life are replaced free of charge.

In my original post I wasn't so much complaining at having to pay 5p for a carrier bag, it was more the till operators response to my request for a carrier bag, she appeared embarrassed to ask for the 5p, I wondered if that was why she didn't charge for the white spirit (it was 2 litres and not 1 as I originally said)

The quality of the bag is rubbish, which now has me thinking, should I take it back and ask for a refund, as in my view it is not fit for purpose therefore under the sale of goods act 1979 I should be able to get a full refund.

I don't believe you can buy just two items and claim to not realise you had only been charged for one! Perhaps when you take you bag back for a refund you could fee up and offer to pay for the white spirit.

Easy tiger, it was a joke #-o

There is no way I am going to waste my time returning the bag, I will probably just dump it in the North Sea.

Nah Nev that's not gonna work, their returns policy say's, 'The product must be unused'...........although technically the nice young lady put both items in the bag, thereby forcing me to use it to convey the said items to my car, so, in law perhaps I do have a claim for a full refund!

Ok, I'm joking again,............. or am I?

On Countryfile on Sunday they showed the problems caused to turtles by plastic bags. Turtles eat them, mistaking them for jellyfish, and they die. The trouble is, it's probably the transparent ones that look like jellyfish, not the bags with Tesrose plastered all over them (I'm assuming this is the case, but it seems logical to me) and of course, as Silverbirch has pointed out, these are used to wrap just about anything and everything you can buy.

If the Govt. are that concerned about the environment then why don't they just stop making plastic bags available? Why not go back to paper bags? Easier to recycle and can be made strong enough for most items.

Yes even the shop assistants get embarrassed asking for money for a bag. I remember not long after it was introduced, i was in a camping shop in north wales. I had just spent £160 on a jacket and the guy was almost red when he asked if i wanted a bag and if i do it will be 5p. LOL
