Same arrangement used on the Kity K5 flat belt which is twisted when using the spindle moulder.

A crossed belt always makes me think of traction engines, threshers and massive flat belts....

ah, but you missed the point, HOW does he fit a new belt? Both shafts are bolted into bearings at both ends, and theyre pretty rusty..
 
Bottom pulley - motor disengages from belt pulley.

Top pulley - looking at the shaft, there's enough endplay in it to slide it out of the bearing on the left. :-D
 
I got a fobco star drill off eBay years ago and it had a twisted belt like that. Had an American motor than turned the wrong way. Bob (9 fingers) kindly rewired it for me so it turned the right way
