Marked out loads of oak newel posts yesterday. Went to work this morning and looked at one with a string that needed morticing and noticed it didn't have a handrail marked. Went into auto mode and thought 'string in newel post must need handrail.'
Balls balls balls, it didn't need a handrail mortice but now it has !!!!!
2.6 metres of aw oak 125mmx100mm.
An expensive unneeded mortice ! Can't plug it, cause I know it'd be there. Oh bother.
Hope you're having a better Friday morning !

It is so annoying when that happens! Its funny how the mind plays tricks on us like that!

If you cant spin it or use it for a shorter newel elsewhere, its best to do the right thing and make a new one and be positive about that, never dwell on it or it'll force another mistake elsewhere.

Can you turn it upside down and hide the mortise or is it already too far gone?

It's gone too far unfortunately

Ouch - I haven't done it with a newel post (yet) but I made a monumental c*ck up earlier in the year. I did a large 2.1m country mahogany table top for a customer. I went in measured up. gave her an estimate. 2 months later went back to the measurements and started cross cutting it all to length, then thought to myself this can't be right. It took me two lengths before i decided to go back to the customers property to double check everything. Yup I wrote 1.1m not 2.1m.... I wasted two long lengths of board from that cock up!

I feel your pain.

If it were my own I would consider planting thin, shaped panels on all four sides of the newel top and bottom, covering it decoratively by making it look as if a moulding had been run around the edge. Of course if you are after a heavy look, make the covers thicker and this could create an illusion of greater size and weight. That's primarily because I'm tight and hate being beaten, and also because I try to follow the "it's not a mistake or a flaw, it's a design opportunity" type mantra. :D
If it's a paid job, suck it up ... unless you can suggest to the customer that it would look great with a little decoration ... :D

That's actually a very good idea - and a very good way of approaching otherwise expensive mistakes.

Unfortunately adding beads wouldn't have been the look they were after.

Came back to work Monday to this

Fresh pair of eyes on it and I wondered if there was a way that the newel post didn't have to be as wide- all the rest are 90mm square.

A quick juggle around and altering the stair width meant it could work so it was the same as all the rest - 90mm square

Cut out the offending mortice and rejoined with resin

Luckily the newel cap has a quirk, so depending how visible the join is on top, I might stick the original off cut back on so the cap is from one piece.(hide the join on the quirk)
Nothing to see here gents, move on

At the time it felt like the world was gonna end so thanks for your support and suggestions ;)
