Old and/or cold putty. Handy tip for a wintry morning; warm, revive and soften your putty in the microwave. About a minute per 2kg.

 Leave it in the pot with the lid on of course! As long as it isn't a tin.

Yes

Tried and tested if it's fresh.

Fresh stuff is best kept in the warm airing cupboard in a linseed-oiled plastic bag.

Not only that, it keeps your hands lovely and soft :D :D :D :D

If you were repairing a single-glazed timber window, what else would you use?

warms up old putty in a couple of minutes

I was watching the latest episode of This Old House a few days ago where they are renovating an early 1700's house that has 'double hung' (sliding sash) windows. Rather than ripping out the old worn windows they were removed for repair and renovation by a specialist company that have found that putting the windows in a steam oven made removal of the old putty really easy as well as softening the old paint allowing them to be easilly scraped back to wood ready for repair painting and glazing. This also made the likelihood of damaging the old original glass very much lower. They have also found that as it is only steamed for a short time it doesn't affect the moisture content of the wood.

An electric heat gun / paint stripper used gently softens old putty enough to get an old chisel or putty knife under it.
Chipping the old stuff out is hard work.

Have you tried that Argus? I'd heard that there was a high chance of the heat cracking the glass especially if it is old original glass.

I gave up trying to remove glass - I'd either cut the frame and pull out the glass in one piece, or break out the glass to save the frame.
