old glue on Beech table joint

Folks, I've been asked to sort out this failed joint. Easy enough, but I don't want to break any of the other joints, and that makes clearing out the old glue a bit problematic.. I don't have a chisel thin enough to get into the grooves. The old glue looks like PVA, but I'm not sure. Would water and a hot air gun do the trick, if I can soften it, it will make the job so much easier.

Hope someone more experienced than I can pronounce.

Hot water applied via a cotton wool bud usually removes most PVA. Slow job though.
 
Thanks PC, that was brilliant. Some hot water on it, and after a short period I was able to pull it out with an awl. The softened glue came out like old chewing gum.
