Its now just over a year ago
I decided that I’d make
A woodwork bench that must be cheap
For my bank balance’ sake

Ive bought second hand timbers,
For the top I’ve got some pine
The legs are 3” square fence posts
For £20 its now all mine

The timber for the top’s quite thick
It measures 9 x 2
There’s enough to make rails as well
Now all I need’s the glue

The finished bench will be 6 foot
And 30 inches wide
Ive little room for larger
As my shed's quite small inside

Ive got the vices ready
Theyre Records through and through
One is a 53 and a half
The others a 52 (**)

I’m pleased to say that yesterday
The first mortice cut was a good’un
It may not look pretty – unlike this ditty
Now its time to start a tenon.

At this slow rate I am concerned
The bench will take such time
The finished article wont be complete
Till two thousand and nine…….!

(**) that might actually be 52 ½ and 53 – cant remember…
