Odd Thing

Anybody have any idea what this is.

It came in a box of old bits and pieces last year. It's got two wacking great bits of carbide on the two prong tips but other than that....... :?:

The whole thing is so short and the carbide tips are so chunky, they must grind out a wide shallow circle.

Perhaps it's a sort of countersink bit for deep holes in masonry?

How would you keep it centered? Or would both work and drill be clamped/fixed?

Without knowing the size. To me it looks like a toothe from a road planing machine.

Coal drill bit.

For boring holes in coal for shot firing.

Rock drill bits are totally different.

It would be attached to the spiral rod with wire and used on a hand held machine, and could be driven by electric, compressed air or hydraulics.

I think you might have something with the coal boring. It came from an old boy from the northeast near Newcastle. Not going to be much use to me though i'm affraid. Dont need anything dynamited.
