Drum rollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

We have the results and some comments from Richard and they are as follows...

1st- Silverbirch, (6 points)a very original design, thinking outside the box as they say, clearly a platter but a bit different. Wasn't entirely sure about the ski's to begin with but it has grown on me. The inserts are a really great effect.

2nd- Henton49er, (5 points) a classic platter design, well exicuted and the artistic finishes and applied effects are really well done and I feel all of the parts work together and compliment each other. I would say he has really mastered that leaf effect which I really like.

3rd- Hesh, (4 points)I love the rim design here, really well made and the finish looks superb on what can be a difficult wood for bowl work. I can't spot any colour bleed which can let down this sort of work so well done.

4th- gregmcateer, (3 points)a simple but classic platter with a simple but well executed pyro design. The whole job looks to be well finished on a wood that can, again, be difficult to work. Good job!

5th- Woodspoiler, (2 points)this would not have been easy to turn, a large plate this size of that thickness would be easier to wreck than finish well. Well finished with a really neat and well exicuted, spirit stains can be a real pig to work with, they tend to run and follow the grain which spoils the entire job, I can't see any bleed and it is a really interesting pattern. Well done.

As always I am happy to offer any further critique or input either via pm or on the forum if anyone would like it. Well done to all entries.

Richard.

and 1 point to the other entrants.

Thanks to all involved and those that managed to get an entry in, and of course to Blister for starting the challenge in the first place =D> . Lets see if we can get a few more entries in for next month. [-o<
Mod edit: links added.

=D> I think some fantastic entries this month all bar mine in fact ( just cos i made it doesnt mean i gotta like it  ) and a most original winner, well done Ian.

I am delighted to have got another podium position, and to come second only to the stunning platter by Silverbirch is really great!!

Congratulations to Silverbirch and the other winners. Many thanks to Richard for the judging and Nev for the organisation.

What's next month's challenge?

I'm working on it. Blisters original idea was a Table Lamp so we'll stick with that, I just need to work out the R+R :?

Re: your platter, how do you apply the crackle paint ? Base colour then a crackle top coat or ???

I'm chuffed to bits with third this month as I thought there were some really good entries, a deserved winner in my opinion and I dont envy Richard having to pick the others. Thanks again to Nev and Richard for organising and judging the challange and I look forward to next months R&R's.

Hopefully more people will have the time to enter next month as the range of ideas and interpretations is always great to see nomatter what level people are at.

Regards

Steve

Well done, indeed, Silverbirch - I absolutely love your design and execution.

Great job, you other guys, too.

I feel like a proper turner now I've actually got in the points, when in amongst you fellahs!

Richard, thanks for judging and I would appreciate any C&C you have - open or PM, whichever you prefer.

Cheers

Greg

Yes, it is a two paint application. Depending upon how you want the crackle to appear you apply 2 or more base coats (I used 4 coats). While the last base coat is still tacky, spray on one or more top coats (i used 2 coats). I like the effect of not applying any sanding sealer as the crackle is more exaggerated in the grain of the wood. I applied both paints (total 6 coats) in a period of approx. 20 minutes with the lathe rotating at about 50 rpm. As you can see, my base coat is gold and my top coat black. There are a limited number of other colours available.

Don't do yourself down Nev, your plate was a beauty, I thought mine looked OK till I saw yours and the others, excellent work, I must try that technique sometime!

enjoyed looking in on the platters this month, an interesting range of output against a well set brief in my view.

sorry I missed (again) but hope to be back in action soon!

Not doing myself down Kim, I'm just not that keen on the glossy finish...

or the colour...

or the shape...

apart from that its lovely

The challenge has still not lost it's appeal for me .I cant be an entrant but I look forward to it as if I was. Some really good entries as usual and not an easy job for Richard , The standard of turning has really improved over the last couple of years. It is a fantastic feeling to be in the winners enclosure ,but it is also a great feeling to be in with a chance of being in the mix , But you can't win if your not in .Well done to all get your selves ready for November ,best of luck to all.

Delighted to pick up six points this month. I wasn`t at all sure how my entry would be viewed from the judge`s point of view.
Some smashing decorative effects on display this month - yes, yours included Nev!

Ian

Absolutely stunning entries, I couldn't make it but if I'd known the standard in advance I might well have been frightened off! All were very very good.

Well done everyone that entred, a really high standard of work all round.

Greg, I think you did really well with your platter. Anyone that has seen my judging over the last year or so and also seen my work, should know by now that I really like clean simple designs with just a touch of detailing to add some class. I think your platter was well done in a timber that can be difficult to work and finish yet there was no sign of torn grain or poor finish which will imediately loose points in my book. I think the only area you could improve is on your curve on the bottom - the top looks great - I would like to see a more flowing curve with a little more wieght out from the convex area near the foot. I also liked the simple but clearly defined pyro and I also think that leaving the knot was the right thing to do, in this case filling it would have added nothing I think.

Cheers

Richard
