No knowledge of scrolling, but obeche is easily worked - no real grain pattern or knots, lightweight.
At school (late 60's) we used agba, ramin, obeche and jelutong because they were easily worked.
 
I tried obeche some months ago and if I could sum it up in one word it would be crap. First of all the colour is not very nice, its the same as someone who has just thrown up. It is quite a soft wood and very light, almost like balsa wood. Its a piece of cake to cut but if you use a router to round over the edges it can tear the end grain. Another wood I no longer use is poplar or tulip wood as it is sometimes called, its very similar to working with pine, very open grain and takes a lot of work to get a reasonable finish.
