dining table may 2015 003.JPG

5' x 3' Oak dining table at last completed after the problems I had with the top. In the end I bought new boards. They are slightly lighter than the legs but haven't attempted to darken them yet.
The legs are 60mm down to 35mm tapered on the inside faces and the top is 25mm thick. The corners are square and I'm unsure if I should give them a radius - any comments on that welcome. It's finished with 3 coats of Liberon Finishing Oil and 2 coats of Black Bison Clear Wax.

Personally I wouldn't put a radius on the top - it would be at odds with the square taper of the legs to my eye.

But that's just my eye - others may feel differently.

Nice work - looks well proportioned.

That looks practical and useful. Very satisfying to make something just right for your needs.

I'd leave the corners square too.

Nice table, I would also leave the corners square.

Rather nice. I like the colour and finish. Time to call it job jobbed I think and leave the corners as they are.

Thanks guys for your comments. Taking your advice on the corners, I'll leave them square.

Pete - I'd like to make a set of chairs but my skill level at the moment isn't up to it. It's mainly the angled tenons that frighten me. The chairs in the photo belonged to my parents and date back to 1939. I'm pretty sure they are oak.

Pete,

Slightly off subject now but how did you have the seat tapering in towards the back with square tenons?

John

The sides are tenoned into the front stretcher not the legs, I have seen done on several chairs.
