Not quite M6

Hi folks.

The imperial force has got me again.

Looking to fit a handle to side of my snap-on tool chest - it has some threaded holes for the purpose that are almost M6 but not quite.

Guess our American friends are still in imperial but any idea of the likely machine screw i will need to order. As so close I guess it 1/4" but are all threads the same in imperial (looks roughly like a std M6 pitch so nothing super fine).

Can someone with the requisite knowledge help me please?

It could be a UNC 1/4-20.

1/4" BSF is 26 threads per inch

Standard M6 is 1mm pitch, which equals 25.4 threads per inch

thats the closest you will get to M6

If it's American it's not going to be BA or BSF. UNC is a pretty coarse thread so I'm sticking with UNF.

The pitch can be measured by fairly accurately whittling a piece of wood to roughly the right diameter, screwing it into the hole, removing.

You then measure the pitch of the marks on the wood using a normal pitch gauge (probably a whitworth one).

Take it to your local fasteners shop, they will be able to tell you and possibly keep the bolt in stock.
