Sorting out my photos for the gallery I came across some of my early work. Not surprisingly I can't help wondering why I was so proud of it at the time but some I am still quite pleased with. See if Chas and other 'golden oldies' remember these.

These stretch back over a period of about 9 or 10 years. I didn't know Mark or his work when I did the box so it is coincidence. Interesting looking back how a lot of my early stuff was , as Chas put it at the time. rustic and I have gone full circle in some ways. I lived on Exmoor at the time and most of my wood came from local farmers and the hedgerows.

I think this has happened to many a turner I know I had an idea quite a while back and then see something similar so did not pursue it.

I reckon it is close to impossible to have an idea that is totally original. We are all influenced by the things we see and experience so in one way or another we are all copying. Blatant imitation is perhaps wrong but personally if I find I have an idea then see someone else doing something similar I will carry on, maybe contact them to check if it is really close.

Isn't imitation the sincerest form of flattery?

Supposedly, but when does it become plagiarism?

When you claim it as your own without giving credit to the original designer/maker
