Hi there good users.
I have a massive selection of my Dads stuff I'm in the process of getting rid of as he's no longer with us. He was a cab maker of yesteryear but had a tendency to collect as well!

I was also a joiner then cab maker, now a prop maker, but have never had the desire or space to have the tools that he did. It's an absolute gold mine in there, all sorts of planes from old womans tooth to rabbet - record to norris, chisels that even if you used one every day of the year there would be surplus, saws (diston tyzack nurse). Do you know the only plane I haven't come across yet is a compass but I haven't delved into the dingy depths of the back of the workshop yet.

So my request to you kind people is - I need serious brains to identify many of them as whilst I know what they're for, some are out of my knowledge zone like the pics here. No real markings that I can see. Would some kind soul point me in the right direction if you have five minutes.

Much appreciated.

Hi John

I can't speak for the two shoulder planes but the other two would be listed in an auction as 'craftsman - made', which is a little better than 'user - made' as it used to be. Just a way of pointing out that they have no factory name and that they were made by a bloke in a shed.
This is not always a bad thing; T. Norris was a bloke in a shed after all but unnamed tools are variable in quality and this always reflects in the prices they fetch no matter how good the tool.

Looks like you have a very pleasant task. I'm sure that we would all love to see other things you unearth.

Hi John.
I'm very sorry to hear about your Dad.
Looks like he had a great collection of tools. I can't add anything to what Richard has already said, I'm afraid, but like he said if you can spare the time I'd love to see some more pictures.

Welcome to the forum.

Adam.

As above.

Whether you are keeping them or selling them, please resist any temptation to polish any tools with Brasso. If you keep them you'll regret it sooner or later; if you sell them you'll have taken hundreds off the value.

Thanks for the welcome and condolences.

Noooooo, no brasso, bit of three-in-one on quad is all I'd go to but to be honest they're all pretty good. Dad was a user collector after he retired and kept them in pretty good order. I recall when I was younger having to oil brown paper and wrap tools up in it if they were being stored. I remeber how he'd used to explain to me that some of the 'shed' made stuff was very sort after but in the line of work I'm in I have to bosch it out yesterday so it went over my head somewhat. It's all powered kit and if it breaks just buy a new one, don't bother trying to fix it as it's not cost effective really, it's not made how it used to be anyway.

So you want to see more pics, how big is the server here!!! I'll keep them coming but it'll be sporadic in all truth. I'll have to post a pic of the trunk holding his planes, it's full of them and measures about 4' by 2' by 2'. It weighs an absolute ton, I can't even drag it, bless him. Found an old Black and decker circular saw the other day, huge thing, looked like it should've been on the set of Flash Gorden, very retro curved motor housing and gold in colour. Felt like it was made of cast iron it was so weighty!

Regards fellas.

Lovely collection John....and condolences as well from me.

Classy collector your Dad....I particularly like the gunmetal bronze smoother...are there any markings on that at all?

Yes...definitely more pics if you have time.

Cheers

Jimi

Sorry to hear about your dad, which is the worst bit.

I have nothing to add on the things which have been shown apart from the shoulder planes look nice, but please be sure to air stuff and not take PM'd vulture offers, because from that start you might have some very nice stuff.

I have a couple of _______ braces - including their corner brace - and they're pretty decent pieces of kit.

Edited: To avoid information being linked to evilbay.

John

Maybe its just me but I don't think these forums are the appropriate place for what appears to be advertising your late father's effects on ebay.
