Hello all, new scroll saw er ( not sure if that's a word! ). I'm usually lurking around on the turners forum as Santa got me an Axminster Perform lathe last Xmas. Well, this Xmas, he's got me a scroll saw, Axminster perform again. So, hopefully all of you fellas will be able to help me out as time goes b as I've got millions of questions!.

I know the saw I've got isn't top of the range but neither is my lathe but I see them as good starters so please don't shoot me down straight away!!!.

Anyway, hello!.

Al.

As a fellow newbie, welcome to this bit! You will come across some brand name loyalty on any forum and it is here too. I would rather have my 10year old Rexon rather than wait until I could afford a Hagrid or a Hogwort You know it's not top flight, but treat yourself and always use good quality blades, and it will be some long time before your competence overtakes the ability of the machine, but enjoy the journey.

Morning Al and welcome, we dont all drive Rolls Royce's either but we get to where we need to go. If the saw you have will do what you want it to then enjoy the hobby, most of us that own Hegners use them to produce goods for customers and need the reliability that the quality of the saw brings, especially as deadlines need to be kept..

Fire away with the questions, loads of talented guys on here to give assistance, look forward to your first pieces..

I agree with everything Steve has said. As I have said many times before, it's down to what you want to get out of your saw. For most people its just a hobby so the length of time it takes to make something is neither here nor there. With the less expensive saws blade changing can be frustrating and if you are doing pierced work, such as a portrait it can be even more frustrating but the more you use the saw the easier it becomes. On the other side of the coin many of us use the scroll saw to help supplement our income and have orders coming in on a regular basis for a wide range of things. As Steve pointed out a Hegner saw gives us peace of mind that we have the best quality saw available along with renowned reliability and it is very unlikely to let us down.

We always welcome new people to the forum and in no way are we biased or snobs just because many of us own a Hegner. We have the best tool for the job in hand. We will always offer advice to anyone new to scroll sawing, we all had to start at the beginning so I know how valuable good advice can be and if we can help anyone we will. But please don't take out of context what we are trying to get across as some do on here. We are only trying to help.

Hello again Al

The best advise I can give would be to get decent blades from Mikes Workshop and check out Steve Goods website for free patterns (scroll saw workshop) it has a link to Mikes.

Any help you need you only have to ask as the scrollers on here have been a great help to me along the way from beginner to still a beginner

PS
How did you get on with the pen blanks?

Thanks all!, I have seen some of the to ing and fro ing if you like on brand names so I'm going to stay well out of that!. The way I see it is as has been said, u guys with the Ferrari frets use them for business if you like so lots of experience there for me & the guys with ones such as myself also have a vast amount of experience so in equal measures I'll be picking your brains!. Thanks for the welcome though guys, really appreciate it!.

As for pics mike, I've just posted a couple on the lathe forum, it's taken me nearly a year to figure that out!. I'll get some up of the pens I did with the blanks you sent me, I was really pleased with the end result although I've gone a little bananas with a bench top saw & now have hundreds of pen blanks so if ever you need any let me know!!!.

With regards to pics I'll put one up of my 1st project when time/kids allow!.

As for blades everyone, do all blades fit every saw?, I have one fitted which kind of looks like a hacksaw blade if you will forgive my lack of knowledge, by that I mean it's quite big & I don't think I would be able to do a lot of complicated stuff, not that I'm ready, also, pin/pinless?......

Cheers all!!!.

Most people would use pinless or plain blades, because the blade will fit through a smaller hole when making fine internal cuts and may even use smaller than 1mm drilling bits. Some entry level machines have a holder that will accommodate both types of blade. Hope that helps.

A very warm welcome to a very friendly site. When I bought my Hegner a long while ago I did not know that there were other makes of scroll saws.To be honest I only found out when I was fortunate to find this site that was almost 12 months ago.I have made some good friends here and have learnt quite a bit from the various posts.I can not add to the previous posts, but you will find out yourself in due course welcome aboard.
