Hi guys,

I've been interested in woodworking for many years but other than DIY woodwork ie hanging doors and laying laminate floor, my experience is pretty limited.

My summer project this year is building a proper workshop 14' by 14' at the bottom of the garden, I'm quite proficient with DIY but this is the largest project I have ever embarked on. I have so far dug the footings and am getting a mixer delivered tomorrow for the first stage of laying the base.

I was looking around for local woodworking classes to start learning the ropes but unless I want an apprenticeship in carpentry (I'd love to but have a career in finance that pays pretty good money) ;-)

So thought I'd join this forum to learn bits and pieces and to chat with like-minded people

Kind regards
Damian

Hahaha, my brother is a sparky and is going to help me install the 'electwickery' once it's up. I was going to install a bit of conduit through the base so it's ready to feed the cable through once the shed is up.

Welcome Damian , you are going to like it here. If I may advise , take pictures of the build. For one thing we love to see pictures of projects. Another reason is that pictures make advising easier for the wiser of our members (not me , I'm a dilletente) when they can see a problem rather than just getting a description. After one more post you will be able to attach images to your words and get accurate help if needed.
Be sure to drop in on some of our other topics such as hand tools or scrolling perhaps turning or finishing , for more specific enquiries. This place is jammed with interesting people doing interesting things.

Welcome to the forum Damion. If you havent already seen Steve Maskery's post on building a workshop, it may help you - i-ve-finally-got-myself-shifted-t79315.html Steve also has some excellent DVD's he has made on woodworking, which will definantely help you get started.

There are also many other workshop build's throughout the forum that may also help.

Have fun

Alex

Welcome to the forum Damian...

There's a quote I like, which seems to apply itself to woodwork,

'Tomorrow is promised to no one.' (Clint Eastwood as Luther in 'Absolute Power'.)
So get on with it m'man...

Although with so many of us woodworkers being prone to procrastination, most of us ignore that, and have a 'round-tuit' list, in lieu of a bucket list!

Cheers

John :D

Thanks Alex,

Am part way through reading this, fascinating stuff although does make me question my choices of materials and build design.

I dug the footings and after work today am pouring the concrete foundations, 8" deep 12" wide and am building a block wall on which to build the workshop on.

I did have intentions of pouring a concrete slab and then building the shed on top of this, but I'm worried about having useable height clearance internally whilst staying under 2.5m at the peak. having an extra 10cm of block reduces the eaves height so I was going to span the width of the shed (4.15m) with 5x2 joists and a couple of dwarf walls as support, and build the 18mm OSB floor onto this.

Build frames using 4x2s with uprights 2' apart, trusses 2' apart and topped with 18mm OSB and covered in felt.

I wanted to clad the outside with shiplap, insulate with shiny bubble wrap the floor/walls/roof and the clad the inside with some softwood T&G.....

How's that for a plan?

P.S I welcome any ideas, I have no building experience but have commonsense
