Hello everyone

Have been lurking this great site for a while now & would like to thank everyone who contributes too it. =D>

I am looking for some advice on building alcove shelves, the size of the shelve i want to build is 1900mm length x 350mm Depth x 50mm Thick. I would like too use a veneered mdf for the outer skins & a hardwood lipping for the fronts. Have been researching on the net including the search for this forum, and a torsion box construction seems to be a good way to go

Does anyone know what dimensions the inner core should be to prevent sagging? & also what thickness the veneered mdf should be? Also can the inner core be made out of mdf?

Any help much appreciated

John

Welcome!

That is a very wide shelf. If I was you, I would save myself large amounts of time making a torsion box and just use some metal bars as the core.

18mm is the most common type of veneered MDF so once you've veneered the top and bottom you'd be left with a core of 14mm. I would source some 14mm bar like this:

And use that as my core.

Also on our sister site someone is making an alcove and you might be interested:

HTH's!

Thanks for replying Chems
interesting idea, care to elaborate a bit more? Would you have the bar running along the length & how many?

Yeah I'd have the bar running along the length, and for a 350mm wide shelf I'd probably have one at the front and one at the back inset perhaps 50mm.
