Hi Folks,

I've been busy making a new workbench - the first I've made. I used the remains of the huge board of white oak I had left over from making my Arts and Crafts coffee table. I cobbled the top together from some ply and ash. I'm planning to upgrade the top when I can get my hands on some really thick wood but I just wanted to get something finished so I could use it.

I've also just finished a Charles Limbert style plant stand. I found a nice piece of English oak which I used. It was the right size that I could make the top out of a single piece. I fumed the piece for a couple of hours to try and give a bit of a mature finish. I oiled the top and the shelf with tung oil prior to finishing with shellac. It does give a nice depth to the finish but I think I should have oiled all the pieces as the colouring is not quite uniform. Never mind!

Hi Edmund.

Both very nice pieces of work 8)

Particularly like the stand - excellent finish on it! You must be very pleased.

Cheers,

Howard

I like 'em both. Good, sturdy bench, and actually I rather like the colour difference on the plant stand. Proper job, Edmund. =D>

Cheers, Alf

Thanks guys. The finish has come up quite nicely on the table. I'll give a polish with some of my homemade polish once the shellac has had a chance to fully harden.

I've just bought some more books on Gustav Stickley with lots of plans for projects - one of the books has original plans from The Craftsan magazine; they are much less detailed than we're used to from today's magazines!
