Might be worth taking a look at some Maori tools, I saw a man in New Zealand giving a demonstration working quite hard wood with a green stone adz. The blade copied from "old" tools was polished and must have been a significant investment of time. I don't know how far back their green stone tools go but I'd guess far enough that their tool makers and yours lived very similar lives.
