A friends youth is making some sort of table lamp for a school project (not sure if GCSE or A-Level) and I think its nearer the art end of the spectrum than the DT side. Anyway he needs a lump of pine, to carve with chisels*, 9.5" x 10" x 5.5" in size.

*but not on a lathe IIRC

Its a hefty lump and to be fair they will struggle to get it in one piece, so to speak.
I've suggested just getting some half respectible PAR or rough sawn from the usual places and then plane smooth and laminate up to get the desired block. This hasnt been met with the greatest of reatcions, possibly because the grain wont match etc but I think if done right it would flow nicely.
Anyhooooooooo, would anyone have a block of pine in that sort of size either as an offcut ( ) or as something that could be cut, in their stash?
I guess it can be any softwood that is light in colour, so pine isnt vital imho

cheers

He would be best going to a local tree surgeon or two and seeing what they have ?

Pine generally won't carve well, better with holly or sycamore or similar, closer grained but not too hard.

Ohh lime, good call :) seems great value too which is a bonus.
Cheers for that
