This is a commission for a lady in the village. The oak tree was 150 years old and finally came a cropper blocking the road. The client who commissioned me to turn it admired its provenance since it was mentioned in some of Charles Kingsley's diaries when he was vicar of our parish church in the 1800's (around the water babies time).

Paulm very kindly drove out and saved my bacon when my own bowl gouges ran out of length! This sucker is deep compared to my normal bowls. My considerable thanks go to his kindness in my morning of need.

Finish is cellulose SS followed by a fine melamine coat. The client wanted lustre and hard wearing.
Bark and punky grain were assisted with CA.

Nice work Rob, and a lovely piece of timber with a great story to it.

The finish is great having seen it close up, surprisingly good on a generally open grained type of wood.

Thanks for the tea and sarnies, (and the spare oak burr !) was tiring watching someone else do all the work, had to have a rest when I got back home

Cheers, Paul

Lovely.
Would be nice if it had a letter of provenance to go with it signed by the trees original owner if you can.

What a beautiful bowl well done like the finish =D> =D> (I have a lot of problems getting a good finish)

Lovely bowl there. I made some bowls quite similar with the natural edge left on, only problem the edge fell off a year later

Aye. That's happened to me before too. This time I flooded the punky bit where bark meets wood with thin ca overnight in the hope it will stabilise it. Time will tell if this works I guess
