Hi, I'm a newbie here. Enjoying reading the various threads.
Wondered if anyone could help identify an old Record vice I've inherited. Wondered if it's worth restoring?
Thanks :)

Yes yes yes. However all I would do is give it a good wire brushing and a liberal soaking with WD40 (other squirty lubricants/release agents are available)
Bolt it down and use it!

At most you might need new jaws. Other than that, do as TWW said and crack on. If you don't do a lot of metal work, then you might bolt it to a piece of 2x2, which can then clamp in the jaws of your woodworking vice when you need to use the metalworking vice.

I'm not seeing much mystery here, BTW. These are bog standard items, unless I'm missing something.

Thanks Mike, good advice. You're right, not a lot of mystery, other than which model it is and how old it might be. All the vices I can see elsewhere have a model number cast on them, but not this one! But no, not that mysterious!

If its a record, look closely at the side opposite the made in england sign. Other makes were available, it isnt guaranteed to be a record.

It looks like a mechanics vice.

The numbers and jaw sizes are as follows.

NO. Jaw width. Opening. Jaw depth.
00 2 1/4 in. 2 1/4 in. 1 1/2 in.
0 2 1/2 in. 2 1/2 in. 1 5/8 in.
1 3 in. 3 1/4in. 1 7/8 in.
2 3 1/2 in. 3 1/2 in. 2 3/8 in.
3 4 in. 4 3/4 in. 2 3/4 in.
4 4 1/2 in. 5 1/2 in. 3in.
5 5 in. 6 1/2 in. 3 1/4 in.
6 6 in. 8 in. 3 1/2 in.
7 7 in. 9 1/4 in. 4 in.
8 8 in. 9 1/4 in. 4 in.

Hope this helps.

Nigel.
