I don't know much about this Plane histororical stuff, but could it be that FWE in Germany made the irons for their EMIR subsidiary and simply used a different logo specifically for those?

That's brilliant Toby! Heads have been scratched in unison around the world and we have a result. I'm satisfied that we have enough circumstantial evidence to say that the mystery logo is closely associated with Emir, and is most likely to be a stylised version of FWE for Frederick William Emmerich.

We still don't know why he chose a column, but there doesn't have to be a reason for everything.

And I'm reassured that I'm not the only nutter who thinks about this stuff sometimes!
