Hello :)

I have just bought a Myford ml8 lathe and the belt need to be changed. I know I have the choice of v belt or buy linked belts. Which is the best?

A link belt will be a bit dearer than a standard V-belt but you won't have to spend hours pulling the headstock apart and putting it back together.

Hi, I can't say that I have ever noticed it to be.
I also recently fitted link to an engineering lathe and that is no noisier.

Some people argue that linked belts are actually less noisy and have less vibration because they don't hold a set if left in place for a long time like a rubber belt will.

Ohhh linked belt it is then :) Thanks guys!

Make sure you fit the belt the correct way round to match the direction of rotation so that it naturally tightens links under load.

Will do :) since these linked belts are so expensive I reckon the last a long time?

You'll need to buy 2m in order to sort the ML8 its about £14 per m with free postage on a certain auction site. Theoretically it should last a long time if correctly aligned and not mistreated.
