If anyone can help I would appreciate it. I am experiencing:

Squeal on start up at high RPM
Start up winding failing to disengage on motor intermittently- could this be due to a lack of lubrication, I haven't lubed the motor in the 2 years I have owned it. If so, what lube should I use?

Thanks!

Hi Have you checked the following?
1.that the headstock bearings have sufficient lubrication, Unscrew the screw caps on the headstock and introduce a few ccs of light oil or ATF
2.Is the drive belt tight enough and is the adjustment bolt tight, if slack it can allow the belt to slacken under load.
3.Before dismantling the motor try a good blast of compressed air or even a good suck fom a vacuum cleaner, a build up of dust can cause the centrifugal switch mechanism to stick. Worst case remove the end bell from the motor and carefully clean the switch with a paint brush, especially the part that slides on the spindle.Do not be tempted to oil the mechanism, as this will encourage dust to stick and cause the problem to repeat, although a dry ptfe spray might be OK.
Hope this helps

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the suggestions. As a matter of course my start up routine is to lube the headstock bearings with ATF, probably a little too much lube but hard to control! I didn't experience the squeal today, I did make sure the wingnut which you loosen when chaning pulley was tight throughout turning though, I guess if I had forgotten to do that in the past then the pulley may night not have been tensioned enough causing the squeal as you say.

I took the motor in to work and had it stripped and serviced, the motor hummed beautifully quietly today with the start up disengaging as it should. Before doing this I had a poke around myself and gave it a clean, so something must have worked.

Thanks again for the advice :)
