When I am working I sometimes take my favorite helper with me. Very useful for clearing away offcuts, finishing off lunch, and making everything in to a game.

Am I alone with having a helper of the 4 legged kind?

Here's mine with her little boy. :D

This is my other assistant, Monty. He doesn't like the workshop so much because of the noise and more importantly, lack of food!

He has just gone into the specialist this morning for a big op on his elbow joint. Feeling a bit glum about it. :(

Hope the op went well Tim?

Thanks very much for asking. My wife is springing him from the vet's as we speak. Op did go well but news isn't good :( He has no cartilage at all in his right elbow joint so its bone on bone - which can only get worse. He's only 6 and is so full of beans but clearly things can't be left as they are. So its either a case of fusing the joint solid (it'll do it naturally in time if we don't), replacement elbow - not be done very much in dogs before or possibly lose the leg in a few years.

We are obviously looking into the elbow replacement as the main option but it may well not be up to us.

Think I'm going to get a drink.

My thoughts with you and your wife Tim, I know how tough it is to see your 'best friend' poorly. I'm sure it will work out.

Tsk, Tim, that's tough. :( I spent most of the morning hearing about a retriever that went straight over a 50ft cliff - busted ribs, punctured lung, torn windpipe, smashed ankles (which'll need replacement - if she survives :( ). Just to top it off apparently she's now got pneumonia. Kinda worrying about what the third animal in distress I hear about will be... 8-[

SDP, Miss Millie is cute with knobs on. :)

Cheers, Alf

sorry to hear the news  Tim but "the best friend " is very resorcfull my old rusty live to 21 despite have a major stoke when he was 10 i have now a lovey jack russell (becky)who is our best friend.

Can I add a bit of good news? My 14 year old alsation has just started a course of injections for her arthritis. Progress is normally not noticeable until after the second injection, but she's already much improved. It's amazing what vets can do nowadays.

I'm trying to think of how to say "Be of good cheer, Tim, your little friend's still around" but I can't help thinking how I'd feel in your situation. So if you can't be of good cheer, at least get some good cheer inside you. In the meantime, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for Monty.

PS Rusty made 21, Martyn  ? Remarkable! What breed was he - some sort of terrier?

The pic of my dog seems to have dropped off te other post so here's Sugar my 3yr old Jack Russell

Gill have you looked at the magnetic collars?

Our venerable cat TC was very sick and I was given one of these collars, I don't think it helped him get better to be honest, but when he was up and about again his long standing limp had gone. I've used one myself for tennis elbow with good results, so possibly worth a try?

Keith

Hi Keith

I'm a great fan of magnets, having seen their apparent effects on numerous occasions. We fitted our alsation with a magnetic collar when she first showed signs of arthritis at the age of four. Within days she was rejuvenated and has spent many happy and active years since. I know that the effects of magnets haven't been proven scientifically, but "what can't speak can't lie".

Many thanks for your kind words and thoughts. It is really much appreciated by everyone except Monty who doesn't know what all the fuss is about.

The truth is that really between this morning and yesterday morning all that has really changed is the amount of information that we have. We had been giving him various supplements (green lipped mussel extract has a positive effect on a lot of dogs and people) and had tried the magnetic approach but in his case there is nothing left to heal ie the cartilage is gone. (although again good things are said a lot about magnetic collars etc)
So we shall persevere and try to get him right - maybe bionic is the way to go? Their powers of recovery are extarordinary - up and about with the lark this morning, 5/5 for breakfast eating and wandered outside to give a squirrel a very very close call. :D
