well, to me, the UK is abroad
On a trip back to see family, I have acquired a few hand tools to fill out the suitcase.
I've just inherited a 10" wooden coffin plane from my dad, despite him dying 38 years ago! My sister finally gave it up as she has never used it. Its stamped Greenslades of Bristol with a Marples blade. Its in poor condition though, a large vertical split on the front, and the blade has been beaten over on the top edge, but my dad had repaired it with a flat brass band to hold it together. Zero value on this one, but usable nonetheless and nicely sentimental.
Also a tiny metal plane that for want of a better word I'm calling a button plane. about 3" x 1".
On my first sunday I went car booting and got an almost identical wooden coffin plane in much better condition, for a very costly 50 pence.
I've just bought at a steam fair and vintage rally, an adjustable spirit level from glass developments of Brixton London. In fair condition, but I will strip it and clean just for the interest of it. I didn't need it and maybe paid a touch over the going price at £8, but hey, it made me smile.
And my big purchase, now I have all these blades (and remembering all the problems I've had with planing) is a JET sharpening system from ebay.
Still got a week to go before getting back to the sunshine ( I am NOT getting started on the weather here!!!) but then no more excuses for not planing straight and true. (yeah, right).
