Hi All, I've just bought a second hand Multico morticer. When I pull the handle down it works as it should but when I release the handle it stays put and doesn't go back up automatically, I have to push the handle back up. The weight looks like the original one and so does the motor so the counterbalance should be correct. So I striped it and cleaned everything to make sure all the runners, pulleys etc. were correct but still got the same problem. Anyone got any idea what to try next please?

Cheers, Froggy.

Something in the bottom where the weight is ?

Do any of them go up automatically?

I've used a few Multicos in various workshops over the years and I don't recall any of them rising by themselves. My current Sedgwick 571 doesn't rise automatically either, but I consider that a good thing, it makes it easier to place the head in the optimum position for chisel and auger changes, or to set the depth stop, without it bouncing back up like Tigger!

Have you taken off the back cover and checked the pulley box hasnt go debris in it?

If its stopping at any position rather than returning it sounds like the dovetail slideways are set a bit too tight, have you tried adjusting them? I guess they are a grub screw with a lock nut or similar.

Have you checked the manual, is it meant to go back up on its own? -I had one years ago but cant remember if the the weight is heavy enough for it to return back up, or is balanced so it will stay where it is.

Again never used a mortiser that automatically raised but never tried a Multico.

I used to have an old Multico which had a weight in the back. It should be balanced so that the handle just stays wherever it is. You will need to push the handle back up but not with any force, if it is hard to push something is wrong. As Robin said might need the slides adjusting. Other possibility is the position of the handle, some are adjustable, on mine if I have the handle set towards the user the weight of the handle can make the morticer come down by itself if you are not careful.

The wire that carries the weight on mine used to wear out and break once in a while, the head would come down very quickly then!

I know it sounds stupid but have you checked the transport bolt isnt engaged [ M series had a transport bolt to stop the weight swinging around]
HM and HMT had a gas spring.
If you can let me know model number [on plate] I can see if I have a parts drawing which might help you understand.

Cheers

Hi guys thanks for all your replies. I have checked everything you all suggested and more to a point where I decided it is not supposed to raise automatically. Having seen your responses I am now certain that that is the case. The thing is I have never used a morticer that didn't raise automatically (limited experience) so started out with the view that it should. However it hasn't been wasted effort as it has benefited from a good overall.
