Hello,
I just moved workshop and my single phase Multico thicknesser, which worked perfectly in my last shop, has started tripping the MCB on the consumer unit in my new shop. Any ideas as to what goes on? I checked the accessable wiring and all is O.K. My guess is that it needs a new switch as it is very old. It as a 2HP motor (SEM) which will not tolerate a 16A MCB at the moment. I thought the heavy load on startup might require a 20A, there is a lot of inertia with all the cast iron, but once every 5 or so starts, the 20A MCB trips out to centre (fault indicated). 20A should be more than enough for a 2HP motor. There seems to be nothing wrong with the motor, as when it is running, it is unfailing, and I guess the capacitor must be O.K. too. I would rather not shell out for a new switch, if it turns out to be something else. Am I missing something? Could the MCB in the old unit be more tolerant to motor start up than the new ones. The old ones Wylex, the new MK.
Mike.
