Hi I want to make a thin alcove cabinet with a mirror mosaic door, but before i start on what is probably a misguided venture, I wondered if you guys could please advise on hinges.

I was planning to make the mosaic as light as possible by using lightweight ply ( 12-18mm spruce structural ply?), using thin mirror and sticking it with silicone, but once i grout it, I guess it will still be quite heavy. Heavy duty butt hinges will be too wide, so I wondered if I could get away with 3 or 4 Eurohinges or if there was a better alternative. Alcove dimension is 2000mm high x 526mm wide x 300mm depth

Also I see that on here, making a carcass with back and sides rather than just framing the wall is recommended, but as it's such a narrow alcove, this would take up space and as the door will be heavy, I wondered if a frame would be better with a more a heavy duty jamb/doorpost to take the hinges on one side?

Any advice much appreciated.

Thanks

There is no reason why you can't frame the alcove as long as its scribed to the wall, as the fixing won't be seen. If the door is very heavy use 4 or 5 hinges. Depending what you are having behind the door you could split it horizontally and use 2 or 3 hinges per door.

Welcome. Not sure I understand about the “framed” vs carcass argument - surely a framed-and-clad structure would take more space than a simple 18mm carcass with a 6mm back?? Re. fixing the hinge side securely, I screw the carcass to the wall and hide the fixings behind the hinge plates.

Re the weights; your door size is conveniently about a square meter. 18mm ply is ~12 Kg/sq m, mirror ~15. Decent (Blum) concealed hinges can take around 7Kg per hinge, so four hinges should do it, five if you're feeling nervous. Don't use 12mm ply as the door - it won't stay flat enough, and the hole for a concealed hinge needs to be 14mm deep...

Not sure if this is mirror mosaic on a sheet, of individually applied fragments, but either way I'd recommend using mirror adhesive, not silicone.

HTH Pete.
