Unclear - so is this you having a dig at trolls or moderators?
EDIT: or is your way of admitting 'My name is Bugbear and I am a troll!

I think probably none of the above. It must be pretty bleak/tiresome at times being a Mod. We're a pretty friendly bunch here. We know, as a rule, where the dragons lie and usually avoid them. Or Ignore them.

I think the article is pretty good with the analogy of the playground. It didn't mention playground bullies, though. I used to frequent the For3 (friend of radio 3) site. My God, there are some nasty types over there. A little cabal (happen to be lefties but could equally be right wing) and they bully anyone who has the temerity to speak out with a different point of view. I've gone into my internet router and stuck the url on a block list. Kept finding myself getting dragged in to see what this grey sackcloth brigade had as 'Rant of the Day'...no willpower, me. So I blocked the site!

I agree with RogerS.

I can imagine it being very tiresome being a Mod.
Constantly having to step into the middle of arguments and remove abusive posts.
But if they happen to delete one side and not the other, they get accused of being biased.
It can't be easy keeping the peace.

On the other hand, I'm sure there are Mods out there who relish playing god.

It's not a position I would want.

And yes, an interesting article and a position/role we often forget about/take for granted.

I think it can be particularly tedious and hard if you manage a site out of passion. You create something for people to talk about their interests and somebody needs to come an spoil it for everybody.

But if you are a professional moderator, I think it's different.
At least, that's what I do up to 50 hours per week, and I am very seldom if ever irritated by the content I moderate, no matter how rude and abusive some users can be. But then, I have no particular interest in the content I moderate.
Were the topics closer to my interests, perhaps it would be different. Still, in a sense trolls makes my job more secure, so I am biased :D

On a side note, for sure users over here seem to be much more kind and civilized than in other forums I frequent, a nice place to be :)
