I am planning on making a shaker style clock and have some Cedar of Lebanon wood which I was thinking of using for the panel, is it a good idea to use cedar for the panel mixed with redwood pine for the main structure, or should you just stick to one species with panels?

Personally I wouldn't mix them in that way, but it's just personal preference.
Two-tone pieces come and go in fashion. Some years ago I went to A Celebration of Craftsmanship and everything was walnut and maple combos. I'd recently made a desk the same way. It looks very dated now.

Do you also realise that it will stink a bit, pretty much for ever? CoL is the stuff for drawer bottoms and wardrobe pomanders. The moths don't like it and feast elsewhere.

Steve nailed it.

If you're in your 60's or 70's you'll probably think two tone woodwork looks cool, if you're in your 20's or 30's you'll probably think it looks clunky.

Doesn't make either group right, but when in doubt err to the young, they're the ones who'll inherit the earth.

Actually cedar and pine is worse than two tone. They're sufficiently close that it'll just look like a mistake.

You're the one who has to live with it, so your's is the only opinion that counts!

IMHO mixing woods is best done on an accent basis. Ebony knobs look great on many woods, especially cherry and maple. But that is a small black accent on a larger piece, not a substantial part of what's in your face. But as custard says, you are the one who has to live with it, so if you like it, make it.

Damn, are you saying I'm making yesterdays boxes today?

I like the black and white one. But that is an ornament, isn't it, rather than a piece of furniture. It's an accent piece of itself.

thanks, that settles that then, I'm sticking with all redwood for it, just needed conformation, I'll save the COL for a special project, would love to make a chest of drawers one day.

You are Boutros Boutros Ghali, Secretary General of the United Nations, and I claim my £5.
