I missed the deadline for this month's challenge. This is my feeble effort. The handle bit was turned using a 12mm spindle gouge, the rest was done with the skew.
Looks good to me! a really nice shape and great choice of material. It's a shame you didn't make the deadline as you obviously made the effort, and I wouldn't class it as a feeble one as this challenge was really difficult (well for me anyway).
I said to t'missus, "Remind me to photograph the dod of wood." She did, and I still forgot. I should've taken the photos as soon as it was finished, but thought I had plenty of time.
The finish on it incidentally is 2 coats of cellulose sanding sealer and paste wax burnished to a shine.
Thanks to all for your kind words. Being almost a complete novice, I treat every project as practice. I say feeble because I still class myself as a beginner. The piece actually looks quite good to my untrained eye.
I'm looking forward to next month. I have an idea which should be fun to turn.
If it makes you feel any better you weren't the only one to wake up on Saturday and kick themselves (or hit themselves over the head with a convenient 'priest' !)
I made this a couple of weeks ago and then forgot to post it last week
It's out of ash and having turned it round I moved the axis off centre to put a flatter face on it so that it wouldn't roll away on a boat - this actually works quite well, though it's the first thing I've ever done off centre and it was an 'interesting' experience! It's 7 1/2 inches and only weighs about 3 oz, but you can give a fairly healthy thwack with it.
i missed it to . its only my 3rd piece i have made on my lathe , only had the lathe a couple of months , was give some lovely bog oak .when i finished the piece i though, hey if i dont use it as a priest i can drill a hole and make a wooden torch
Thanks Chas, I was really pleased to have such good feedback.
I will defo have an entry for the March challenge. I am well into the design phase and now need to work out a few jigs to hold the piece.
Really looking forward to it.
