There's a type of hanging bracket that you can use for mirrors or pictures that you want hanging flush to the wall. It's like a metal cup with a lip that screws flush into a shallow circular mortice/forstner bit hole. The head from a screw in the wall is captured inside this cup by the lip and therefore the mirror hangs flush.

Any idea where to buy them?
 
I make my own from a bit of metal with a slot cut in it, fitted over a hole.
