Mirka Ceros System Advice sought

Hi All

I am sure this has been muted before, but my search facility on here isnt working.

I am looking at getting a Mirka Ceros ROS Sander and wanted to know if anyone has one and their thoughts on it. The good, the bad and the ugly with warts.

I am in the mind to get one, but need to know what users think of it. I know that they are pricy, but you get what you pay for.

Hi Richard

I have had mine for a year or so.

Good points. Virtua;ly dust free with a good vacuum
Light weight when working on vertical surfaces or ceilings (when compared to another sander with a similar dust hose)
Good range of speeds for sanding or even polishing

Bad points. Expensive to buy
Expensive to run, not just for sanding disks but also seems to run through the pad savers quite quickly.

But, despite the expense, I am still very glad I bought it. Certainly the best sander I have ever had.

I bought one last October, and it is brilliant, as you say you get what you pay for. It is expensive but it is an excellent bit of kit. Light to use and dust free. At the time the cheapest place I could find was Rest Express. I got the System 1 deal with pads included. I didn't however get their extractor, but instead got a dustex40 from FFX, which is a bit cheaper and slightly more powerful than Mirka's own model. If I needed a ROS again then I would get exactly the same again, you won't regret it.

Bought mine about 6 weeks ago and so far I'm very pleased with it, I would concur with the previous posters comments but would add that the Abranet discs whilst more expensive last way in excess of any brand of standard alox discs I've ever used. For example I had a 3m walnut work to to refinish, one 80g disc took the whole piece back to clean timber. I think I would have got through half a dozen or more standard discs.

Thanks for the advice...now torn as to which kit I get....hmmmmmmm I know I wont use Halfe as they appear to be the most expensive.

Trialed the 3" version and very impressed. I am a Mirka fan though.
Not heavy whilst in use and most importantly not tiring either.
Fair play to Mirka their sanders give the best finish I think you can get from RO Sanders and we've had the lot, Rupes, 3M, SnapOn etc etc.
Expensive yes but buy a compressor and it's associated running costs to run it's air powered brothers and sisters (equally excellent) and you will be out of pocket.
On my shopping list.

I've had the 5" CEROS for a while now, and wouldn't part with it. It's excellent. You won't regret owning one.

As already mentioned, the Abranet discs are fairly pricey, but will outlast most other discs by a long way. That said, I was at the FFX tool show on Friday, and had a go with some new discs from SIA Abrasives. They've got a product called FiboTec, which are ceramic coated, 119-hole discs. They were demonstrating them using a Mirka. I had a go and the dust extraction was still excellent, and they claim they last even longer than the Abranet discs. They also claim that with their discs you can skip a few grades on the way through, with no detrimental effect, meaning more money saved. Most tempting bit was that their 5" discs are £32 for a box of 100, versus the same price for a box of 50 Abranet discs.

The sales rep offered to visit and let me set up any test of my choice, to test them for myself, so I guess they're confident their product will come out well on a like-for-like test. I'll probably take him up on that offer in the near future.

Thanks Stu, that looks really interesting and cost effective; i'll keep an eye out for them. Thanks to all who have advised. I have decided to go and get one, the cheepest kit I can see with a hoover is from rest express for 595. Dose anyone know anywhere else to get them that might be cheeper.

I prep furniture , kitchen cabinets and wide open spaces of wall area 2 years reliable service daily long use. Super nice to handle. It isn't aggressive if ripping down work tops it isn't the first choice. Another plus is with sheepskin cover for buffing wax on dead slow setting. Deros is an improvement again heavier but upgraded and swap out two size heads. My 5" ideal for me but 6" option wouldn't hurt.

Just buy one, you won't regret it.

I have both the 5mm orbit and 8mm. The 8mm definitely removes more material very quick but I prefer the 5mm in general.
As far as the extractor goes I just bought the hose with the sander as I already have a nilfisk vacuum which fits straight on the hose ( a lot cheaper than the grey one they sell which appears to be nilfisk also).

A place called Rest express near Cirencester have the best prices usually.
