Well, I'm here, but without very much to offer...

Doubtless you already know of http://www.georgesbasement.com/ with its type studies of MF drills - but nothing on the shaves. It might be worth contacting George Langford though?

Similarly, Randy Roeder's excellent page at http://oldtoolheaven.com/index.html misses out the shaves.

My only remaining suggestion is to look at the catalogues, which used to be at Rose Antique Tools but were rescued and re-hosted at the Alaskan Woodworker http://www.alaskawoodworker.com/old-tool-catalogs-and-manuals/millers-falls-catalogs/

Gary Roberts has a few more: http://toolemera.com/Trade Catalogs/catalog.html

PS I do have one that I could take a photo of, and I think I'm not the only one who has - would that help?

thanks andy, ill contact george as recommended.

if you could share your MF with us that would be great, dimensions and pics, cheers.
there is an american who i think can help ill message hit too..

Hi Toby

Sorry for the delay on this one - and maybe this will nudge a few others - I know I'm not the only owner!

You've seen my MF1 Toby...but for the general interest...

Mine's slightly more worn than Andy's...

Nice bit of kit...rosewood handles I think...

The correct method to sharpen this one is to totally ignore the "bevel" and just bring the flat down again...coarse...

...then fine hone...keeping it very flat...

...then using a gouge slip...bring the bevel to the honed flat thus...

...again...coarse then fine...

...you can get some serious curves out of this little gem...whatever the version....something no other tool can achieve so well...if at all....like this bowsaw horn...

Sorry to hijack your thread a tad there Toby...this is a very interesting and unique tool!

Cheers

Hi Toby,

I have just bought one of these, but the blade was badly out of square, so I am trying to re-square it at the moment.
I think I'll try the simple jig BugBear made to sharpen the outside bevel as it looks like it would work well

Anyway, I have found a little information about them, but I don't know if its really what you are after?
