Dunno if this is a good place to post this or not (Mods: perhaps in the sticky list of contacts & suppliers at the top? Dunno). Anyway, from time to time we see requests on her for info on lathe work. I've just found this:

This old Tony:

An American with a far from typical "pushy" US style, and AFAIK, NOT selling anything, this is a series (above is just one example) of a huge variety of metal working lathe info, ranging from quite complex stuff (e.g. gears, thread cutting, DROs) to "simple" but important stuff such as HS tool grinding and drill sharpening. All very clearly explained with just a little added dry humour. Highly recommended if you're into (metal) lathe work, and in a lot of cases includes work with the (in)famous Chinese Mini Lathe.

Also, for those with a bent towards clock and smaller complex mechanisms;

Again the link above is just one example of a complete series of highly informative and absorbing vids.

There are of course many other sites to recommend but I thought I'd just bring these 2 up - as above, I only just found This old Tony.

Those are two of the very best. Entertaining and informative even if you don't have a lathe.

I'll add the grandaddy of them all - Mr Pete 222 aka Tubalcain aka Lyle Peterson. Retired machinist and school shop class teacher, making videos since 2006 with over 57 million views. All the basics and much more besides.

Agree 100% about Tubalcain (but I think he's not on the sticky list at the top). BTW, AndyT, do you happen to know whether or not it's the same Tubalcain who writes/wrote (?) in "Model Engineer" mag?

No, definitely a different person. Both following the same Bible, I expect! (Genesis 4:22)

Abom and Keith fenner are worth a look too.

Both yanks but cant hold it against them.
This old tony is a yank in Italy i believe, which might explain a few things.

Don't know if you meant to link to a specific video for This Old Tony but you pasted the same link twice

Reply: Didn't realise I posted the same link twice, thanks for pointing that out Robbo. But I did know I was linking to a specific video and thought I had pointed that out (my idea was that if clicking that link you'd also see a list of his other vids down the RH side of the page).

I nearly added this to your filing thread, Should you lift the file on the back stroke?

Reply: Good question. You can lift the file off the job on the return stroke if you wish but I was taught it's - probably - better to just relax the down pressure with the file still gently in contact. That way you have less problem "lining up" the file correctly on the next cutting stroke. But I believe it's largely a question of personal technique.

I THINK (can't remember now) that "relax the down pressure on the back stroke" is what I wrote at the time. As above, it's certainly what I was taught, and what I do in practice.

Should I add that link to "Filing" in your opinion?

Another chap who tests a lot of stuff for the mini lathe is Steve Jordan

Reply: Thanks for the other 2 links, both new to me.

Cheers
