Going to undertake a few "shabby chic" projects using reclaimed timber and would like to avoid an unnecessary damage to saw / plane blades. Any recommendations on affordable metal detectors? Stock material will be scaffold boards and floorboards.

What goes around comes around.
Simplest is a rare earth magnet. Short range - will find any iron close to the surface and hang on. I use one for finding screws in plasterboard it's more precise than the proper kit.

I have a pinpoint probe that I use for Metal Detecting and checking timber. It'll locate a bit of nail / foil 6" underground, so nails / pins in wood are a doddle for it.
