The Mary Rose project is making some of its artefacts available online as 3D scans. These include some objects used by the carpenters. You can zoom, rotate and generally get a very good look.

The first batch includes a whetstone holder

and a grooving plane

I predict a flurry of replica Tudor tools appearing in sheds around the world!

Oops!

Clipboard error now fixed. Glad it wasn't anything embarrassing!
Thanks Pete.

Tryign to work out how the grooving plane worked if the scan is accurate as the blade bed doesn't seem to go outside that raised section on the sole.

It's a puzzle, isn't it. Maybe a narrow iron hangs below the bottom face and the plane is run against a batten until it stops cutting down. Crude, but I have a user made plane that's a bit similar, made for cutting a drip groove under a window cill. It works for that one limited job, even without a proper exit for the shavings.

It's an odd plane to choose. I hope they follow up with scans of the rest.
