I've a 4, a 5, and a 7 - they're excellent planes. Your 6 for £20 is undoubtedly a better buy than the new 7.

Strikes me as a very garish red.
The exact name of the colour must be on the interweb somewhere ...
It looks (on my monitor) similar to red used on Millers Falls hand drills - which is Insignia Red. The Humbrol number is 153 but I think you'd need quite a few of their tinlets for a plane :)

As chance would have it, I have only just finished refurbishing a Marples M5 jack. Here is a picture.

I used plasti-kote Metallic Red as the paint - 5 coats. It is very easy to apply - water based, touch dry in 10 minutes, I got all coats done in a single day. I stripped it with B&Q stripper, as recommended by another forum member, but left the area under the rear handle untouched so I could judge the colour match. I was prepared to tint the Metallic Red if necessary, but to my eye it was a pretty good match out of the pot.

By the way, on my plane the frog was black, so I repainted it that way (again using plasti-kote) - I've seen a couple of pictures of Marples metallic planes with black frogs, so I assume it is authentic (no signs of red underneath on mine). How is your's finished?
