Hello,
I’ve been given this cleaver and was wondering if anyone could help me put a manufacturing date on it.

It’s Marples and Sons [plural] so probably not an early one? It also has HIBERNIA written on it along with a single shamrock/trefoil motif.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Tom

I dont think you'll ever manage to get an exact date, but its probably around the late 19th, early 20th century.
Kind of mid 20th century the handle would have been similar to that of a knife, with scales on the sides of a full tang
1880-1920 is probably going to be around that period.

On a professional note, unless its a full tang, i dont think it would be for use in a butchers establishment. Possibly a chefs tools, or a larger kitchen.
The reason im thinking that is if it were a butchers, it would get a lot of work and the handle would loosen off pretty quickly. So maybe light use was its intended

Have a look through these Marples catalogues (1928 p37 looks promising) https://archive.org/details/@mark_stansbury?query=marples

Thank you! That’s what I figured it might be. I don’t think I’ll ever use it tbf, it still has its factory edge and doesn’t appear to have been used so would be a shame to spoil it. I have butchers plastic handled cleaver anyway so I have no need really.
