I've never made a spoon before but had a stick of firewood and finally got chipping away.

I'm not sure what is a good finish for maple....

It might be used as a serving spoon a little bit too so I need to find a finish that is food safe (well at least non-toxic) as well as looking good.

What is to watch out for with maple finishes ? Yellowing?

Well it was fun to make, I marked out a rough shape and cut down to the line, chipped it out then used some gouges and a carving knife (Mora one) then some rasps and just sanding it today.

Thanks,
Ed

That is good work Ed, especially for your first. I can see your firewood pile getting smaller as you get carried away.

Finish? Without experience on my part how about vegetable oil? Olive?

That looks too good to use Ed   . It's a lovely shape so why not give it a coat of wax and hang it on the wall for all to admire!
Regards Keith

I really like that, the form is stunning! You could use foodsafe finish from Chestnut; have used it on bowls and chopping boards before (only in beech though)
Kind regards
Dan.
