Mine is just going 'off' a bit now.

I thoroughly cleaned the blade this afternoon and noticed the cutting edges are beginning to look worn (under a hand lens). It'll be OK for a while, but I have more 19mm chipboard to do soon (yuk), so I will have to do something about it.

It's a 44 tooth 165mm blade (unusual size). It looks quite well made, there's a reasonable amount of carbide, and a replacement is about £36-40. I ought to have a spare, but is it worth getting it resharpened? Has anyone done this, or is the blade just to be thrown away?

Thoughts from Makita owners appreciated...

E.

PS: We have a good Leitz franchise locally - I'll ring them in the morning to ask if it's too small for them to bother with. But thoughts still welcome!

Any firm capable of sharpening sawblades will be able to sharpen it. I use Thames Valley Saw Sharpening service for my Festool blades.

Most places have a saw doctor tucked away on an industrial estate nearby. Either try yellow pages or ask at a local woodworkers workshop and see who they use. Most places seem to have a weekly delivery/collection service to the trade and you might be able to leave your balde with a local pro and pick it up the following week. Charges tend to be per tooth say 25-30p per tooth perhaps?

Does it have a 20mm bore? Toolstation have a 165x 40x 20 blade by Freud for £17.85 in my Oct 11 catalogue

Thanks both,

Leitz, I assume related to the optics company, have a sharpening place near Temple Meads station. They've done my SCMS and table saw blades in the past really well and they aren't expensive.

Lord K has encouraged me (that it's worthwhile). I've just looked at the Toolstation site - they must have sold out, as there are a few Freud blades, but I can't see the right size, even in the clearance section.

I'll take it to Leitz and put another one on the Xmas list!

Cheers chaps,

E.

Hi Eric,

Always worth giving Bell Tools a ring - they are up the top Gloucester Road by the Monks Park turning for Southmead Hospital.
They specialise in Makita and stock a fair few blades for the tools, including branded Makita as well as Freud ones. (they also have a sharpening service as well)
Tel no is: 0117 9690288

HTH,

Andy

Good point, Andy.

I like Bell Tools - I got my Makita SDS from them - they did a really good deal at the time too. They're a good place for router cutters in a hurry too, and the only people who had the right size box spanner for one of our shower fittings (42mm, IIRC).

I also like Pan tools in Bedminster, but they're more awkward to get to.

Angus Bell the owner is a very good friend of mine - if you speak to Adam or Tom his sons, Ian or Dave who also work there and say I sent you they'll probably charge you double!

cheers,
Andy
