I decided to play with laminating woods on the lathe, I am still very much at the learning stages of ‘lathing’ so this was an opportunity to practice spindle skills, with a possible outcome that looks more impressive than it really should!

so I took a random lump of hardwood (no idea what it is), sawed across it diagonally on the bandsaw, sanded, and then inserted a slice of (I think) olive wood - glued it up overnight and then did the same at a different angle with a thin slice of walnut…

onto the lathe to then turn it… with a random goal of a candlestick…

but the drilling and inserting at the end went wrong…

so it is now something that could work as a handle for something (vagueness is one of my skills…)

still, it looks pretty and the laminating bit went well!

Good idea on the inserted decorative bits, could start out with a beech rolling pin and make it more exciting (they are very inexpensive in some supermarkets).

What you have there is a coffee-tamper for your expresso machine, or a mouse-club for rodent removal, or a soil-firmer for seed planting, or carve a decoration in the flat bit and its a decorative butter-pat-maker, or make a single saw cut across the top and its an important-reminder-holder for the kitchen table, or do the same and its a photo-holder, or drill up the middle and weight it well with old steel nuts and its a biffer-of-things-that-need-biffing, or..... etc etc.

yes, plan to play with rolling pins at some point...

loving the creative ideas though - it is of course all of those :)
