has anybody made any magnetic knife/chisel racks, similar (or otherwise) to the benchcrafted ones?

Is it just a matter of drilling/routing a groove from the back of the timber and putting a magnet into the hole? I don't have a bandsaw, else could take a slither from the front, drill, put magnets in and stick the face back on. Constructional veneers could achieve that though, if it is the way to make them.

Assuming you are using powerful magnets (neodymium) then yes it wont be much more work than you have suggested (holes in the back of the timber), tbh I dont see a reason not to use them - but if we hang on a while I guess a forumite will be along with a reason not to. Apart from China buying up much of the worlds resources and slowly pushing up prices

FWIW

if they are the "rare earth" type that I see mentioned, that is what I had in mind.
