hi tomorrow i am travelling down to my sons for a few days from Eastbourne Sussex to Devizes in Wiltshire as i have lots of time on my hands i thought it would be nice to look in at some saw mills on route i have contacted goulden hardwood's but Paul is busy away somewhere so can anyone suggest some sawmills that i may visit don't mind where they are as i can adjust my route to take them in. the woods that i am looking for is oak, walnut, yew , London plane and also silver birch and perhaps some beech as i make wooden signs waney edge is great for me as the signs are rustic and look good with bark on any suggestions guys ....................thanks ......Roger

Good luck on the London Plane- it seems to be like rocking horse dung at the moment, if you want it quarter sawm. :)

There's The Timber Mill in Alresford (Hants) and Wests in Sussex.
Both not too far off the A272?

I don't have personal experience of either but have heard good things about Vastern Timber at Wootton Bassett - http://www.vastern.co.uk/ - who are definitely a 'proper' sawmill, and Oscar Windebank at Box - http://www.oscarwindebank.co.uk/ who I think are more of a general hardwood importing merchant.

Another thought: the Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum sell timber that has had to be trimmed or thinned at the wonderful arboretum - so they have a different sort of mixture of timbers.

Their website http://www.fowa.org.uk/news_and_events/wood_sales says the sales are on the second Saturday and Sunday of each month. I described a visit there in this post from 2010.

WL West have a lot of bits and pieces and cater for trade and hobby.
I use them sometimes but they are about 1.5 hours from me. (near Eastbourne too.)

Not sure if the Timber Mill is still there Rod ? When I search for it on google it comes up with one called that in Cornwall, or am I missing it ?

Cheers, Paul
