Hi all... anyone used these....

http://www.diy.com/departments/diall-loft-storage-stilt-pack-of-12/181925_BQ.prd

A friend is having a new boiler fitted in her loft and although there are a few boards up there, not enough i've been told. So i'm looking to make a single 'run' of boards from the hatch to an external wall where the new boiler is to be fitted i.e. 4ft wide in 1ft (or equivalent) flooring strips, so 12 strips in all.... no problem.

I'm hoping the joist will be at 16" centres so 4 stilts per width of flooring 'run'.... but i'm just concerned there might be some lateral movement once fitted/stood on being only 1 width (4ft) wide.... or am i being a plank and it'll be fine.? (hammer)

Any thoughts...

Nick

Hi Nick
I've used a similar product (I think it came from Screwfix) to make a raised storage area over thick insulation but I wouldn't like to walk on it. I think they are intended to create storage areas rather than walkways. I created walkways around the loft with timber decking on timber battens. I used decking because it was easier to handle and fix in a confined space.

I used CLS in my loft to create a raised storage area and tried to put the uprights on or near to joists immediately above the walls beneath to take the load without putting too much weight on the ceilings below, which can crack if you're not careful. Used t&g chipborad on top of a framework, that was in turn supported by the uprights mentioned and some hangers from the ridge board. You could do the riverdance on it.

Make sure the walk-way is wide enough, with a hand rail, and the working platform is big enough, with lighting, and a power socket.
Or you might find the gas man won't go up there!

I just did it with lengths of 4x2 instead of those stilts, and cut the loft insulation to fit round them.
