Lip and Spur drill bit sets.

Anybody know of a decent set of lip and spur drills from about 1.5mm to 6.5mm by 0.5mm increments (or 1/16" to 1/4" by 1/16ths)?

I know there are sets about from about 1/8" to 1/2" (or 3mm to 10mm) and there have been for a long time, because I own one - a set of Kaliber drills I bought from Tilgear many years ago, and very good they've been too. However, I never use the sizes above about 6mm because I go to Jennings bits in the brace, but I would find a few smaller than 3mm handy for screw pilot holes. At the moment, I'm 'borrowing' the metalworking jobber drills; it would be nice to have dedicated sets to keep in the appropriate places. For woodworking, I also find the lip-and-spur a bit easier to start bang on the right spot, and a tad cleaner cutting.

I did find some (very nice) loose lip-and-spur drills on the Workshop Heaven site, but they seemed to start at about 2.5mm and they totted up to quite a few pennies for one of each size.

If all else fails, I might buy some loose jobber drills 1.5mm to 6mm by 0.5mm steps and grind something like a lip-and-spur point on the bigger ones.

Surprised they are so liked. Got a set of Colt ones but don't find them very special and not much better than some Faithful ones.

Bet the Famag set workshop heaven sell are good but at that price they would need to be.

Some years back used some Dewalt pilot point drills and I remember thinking they were great at the time. Forgot all about them until now.

You'll notice that they offer the set in either imperial or metric. I use them with an eggbeater drill and they perform excellently. Not cheap but worth the money IMO.

I know these are the 'dakota' brand, but they do cut pretty clean for the price and its handy to have a set of wood drills in half sizes. Its surprising how often an odd size like 11.5mm has come in handy.

I actually dont think very small drill bits, brad point/lip n spur are all that good in very small sizes, 3mm is very small to form a spur and lip.

Ah that might explain my disappointing results with Colt ones as usually using 3mm 4mm and 5mm

They are OK in those small sizes, you've just got to clear the chips more frequently. I've had a number of different Lip/Spur bits including a Colt set.
The best example that I've had was one from Trend. I bought a few of their fractional sizes through a local tool shop. I think 4 different bits altogether. The one at 6.5 mm (I think!) was probably the best lip/spur bit I've ever come across. The strange thing is that it looked totally different to the other 3 trend bits. Obviously sourced from a different maker but it had no markings on it, other than the size. I also had one from CK that was pretty good. My Colt set is OK, not the best but far from being the worst.

Thanks, chaps. I think the answer to my specific question is 'no'. There are quite a few sets around, but all include drills bigger than I need, so I'd be paying for tools I'll probably never use, and still be short of the little ones. Not to worry - I'll lash something up - I've managed to get by for a couple of decades, so a bit longer won't hurt!

Part of the problem is that the packaging comes in predetermined sizes and manufacturers have a tendency to fill them all with products.

There's no reason why we couldn't do one of these sets and just take out some of the back row for you...

I don't know if they're exactly lip and spur as the point is wide but I use Dewalt extreme 2 bits for drilling pen blanks and IMO they beat the cold bits I have hands down. Sizes I use are from 7mm up so maybe not relevant but can be bought on ebay singly so may be worth a go. What I did as also find many of those in sets are rarely used.
