What with the veg patch and garden then laid up for three days then tidying and cutting blanks, I have not had much shed time so thought I had better go turn something before I forget how.
This is the result very punky in places so plenty of soaking with sealer but got there in the end finished using the chestnut buffing system.

5" X 2 3/4" finished size I took a photo all around to show the spalting

Very nice Dalboy!

I had a (what I was told was Spalted Alder) bowl a while back that was very soft and punky with the spalting, and did the same, with heaps of sealer. Did you apply it with a brush? I heard that's effective, but I don't know as I didn't have one handy and ended up wiping the stuff on thickly. I only ask, cos I'd like to know how you handled your piece here.

I like the simple shape, leaves the lovely figuring to stay the center of attention.

May I ask what tool you used to undercut the inside edge? I'm very rusty, not had much time this year for turning, so full of questions :)

Nic.

Yes I applied the sealer with a brush. I also thinned the sealer which helps it to penetrate a lot more, it will need more coats but worth it in the end. I used a bowl gauge from start to finish

Wow! That's one hell of a coincidence, I've just turned almost the exact same bowl this afternoon, punky spalted beech and almost the same shape. I'm just have a quick cuppa then back out to the shed to wax and polish. I'll post mine here when done.
Love yours by the way.

Here's mine, 4 3/4" x 2 3/4".
Spalted beech, very punky but it sanded out.
Much prefer the shape and colour of yours though.

Nice looking bowl Derek, i like the shape and the spalt in the wood. Les

Tried to keep it simple as I feel with the spalting needs to show through. Good to see you around Les

Lovely both. I agree, spalted beech is like a painting the mycelial lines are so striking

That is one of the beauties of spalted wood no two pieces are the same and always a surprise when turning them

Both lovely, nicely spalted wood is like a good steak. It needs preparing simply but with skill to bring out the best in it.

Nice work.
