I am with jacod with this one I mark the hinge out with my thumb nail and gnaw the wood away with my teeth, these modern tool aren't worth buying....

n.b. the butt gauge isn't a modern tool they stopped making them in 1984. They were USA only and virtually unknown in the UK.

I have a home made wooden butt mortise plane. Personally I like it and used it a lot for the final leveling of hinge mortises where I had removed the bulk with a chisel. Then at one point my production runs grew long enough to validate the purchase of an electric router and later a Haffner SL100 hinge mortiser.........
